360° Log Scanning Before the First Cut
ALTAY LogScan captures a complete 360° model of each log in position — on the carriage, headrig, end dogger, or infeed. 3D laser triangulation sensors surrounding the log reconstruct its full geometry, including sweep, taper, and ovality, within one second. The optimization engine then evaluates thousands of cutting patterns in under 200 ms and drives the setworks directly via PROFINET — so every log is optimally aligned before the first cut.

How ALTAY LogScan Works
Unlike linear scanners, ALTAY captures logs in position — multiple 3D laser profile sensors surround the log to create a complete 3D model in real time.
Log Positioning
The log arrives at the carriage, headrig, end dogger, or infeed. Laser profile sensors are mounted at strategic angles around the scanning zone.
360° Capture
Multiple laser triangulation sensors simultaneously capture full log geometry — sweep, taper, ovality, and bark thickness — in a single second.
3D Reconstruction
Algorithms reconstruct a complete 3D surface mesh in real time, compensating for bark, debris, and environmental factors.
Cutting Optimization
The optimization engine evaluates thousands of cutting patterns in under 200 ms to maximize total value recovery.
PLC Setworks Control
Optimized positions are sent directly to the PLC via PROFINET, positioning setworks with millimeter precision for every cut.
Cutting Optimization Engine
ALTAY's optimization engine considers log geometry, product prices, demand priorities, and machine constraints to calculate the single best cutting pattern for maximum value — and positions the setworks accordingly, log after log.
WoodScan Trace
Every board knows its log. Every log scanned at the sawline receives a digital identity that follows it through the entire mill. Geometry, quality grade, and the assigned cutting plan travel with the log — so no measurement is ever repeated or lost.
After sawing, WoodScan Trace matches each board back to its source log and position within it, turning production data into verifiable traceability for yield analysis, quality claims, and chain-of-custody reporting.
Key Benefits
Why mills choose ALTAY LogScan for their primary breakdown operations.
Complete 360° Geometry
Every angle of the log is captured in position — no rotation, no second pass, no blind spots.
Laser-Grade Reliability
3D laser triangulation measures dark, wet, or bark-covered surfaces reliably — where passive camera-based systems struggle.
Value-Optimized First Cut
Each log is aligned to its best cutting pattern before sawing starts, raising recovery from the very first board.
One-Second Scanning
Full geometry within a second of positioning — the scanner never slows the sawline down.
Real-Time Compensation
Live correction for bark, debris, environmental conditions, and machine offsets keeps measurements stable.
Flexible Mounting
Performs across all sawline positions: headrig carriage, end dogger, short-coupled infeed, or conveyor.
Direct Machine Control
PROFINET connection to PLC setworks delivers millimeter-precise positioning with deterministic timing.
