Multi-Sensor Log Scanning for Geometry and Internal Quality
TUNA LogScan is a linear multi-sensor scanner built for industrial sawmills. Combining 3D laser triangulation, high-resolution colour imaging, and optional X-ray sensing, it measures diameter, length, volume, taper, and sweep — overbark and underbark — with ±1 mm repeatability. The X-ray module shows what is inside the log before sawing: AI models trained on production reference data detect internal defects and grade each log by internal quality — so sorting and cutting decisions are driven by value, not volume alone.

How TUNA LogScan Works
Logs pass through a linear scanner array in the logyard. Multiple sensor types capture data simultaneously in a single pass.
Log Entry Detection
Infrared presence sensors detect the approaching log and trigger the scanning sequence with precise timing synchronization.
Laser Profiling
2048+ point 3D laser triangulation arrays capture precise surface geometry profiles at full production speed.
Color Image Capture
High-resolution colour cameras record surface details for defect analysis, bark assessment, and species identification.
X-ray Densitometry
The optional X-ray module reveals internal density variations and hidden defects — without contact, before sawing.
Cutting Optimization Starts at the Log Sorting Line
Every log TUNA LogScan measures becomes a digital model — exact geometry, surface quality, and internal defects captured in a single pass. This model feeds Optisoft in real time, which evaluates possible cutting patterns and directs each log to the sorting bin that matches its optimal end product. When the log reaches the sawline, WoodScan identifies it and retrieves the precomputed cutting solution and rotation angle — so the first cut is already the best cut.
The result: sorting decisions made for value, not just dimension, and measurably higher recovery from every log.
WoodScan Trace
Every board knows its log. Every log scanned by TUNA receives a digital identity that follows it through the entire mill. Geometry, quality grade, and the assigned cutting plan travel with the log — from reception to sawline — so no measurement is ever repeated or lost.
After sawing, WoodScan Trace matches each board back to its source log and position within it, turning production data into verifiable traceability for yield analysis, quality claims, and chain-of-custody reporting.
